非礼を恥じる：参禅その続き

時として、道元禅師が、云っていた言葉を、想い起こす。食事の時の所作・振る舞いも、挨拶も、すべて、合理性があって、それが、長い年月を積み重ねるに従って、フォルム化される。やがては、それが、眼に見えない形での礼儀や規範なり、ルールなりになり始め、その根本的な精神が忘れ去られ、形骸化や、抑圧に転化してしまいがちである。スペインの写真家に伴われて行われた玄江院での参禅体験を終えたとき、我々日本人達は、脚を揉んだりしていたが、彼だけが、恐らく、欧州で参禅をしていたのであろうか、黒墨の衣を纏い、白壁に向かって、額を床に、押しつけて、両手を上に向けて、恭しく、礼をして、若い僧侶に対しても、合掌とお辞儀をきちんとし終えた。何とも恥じ入るばかりである。日本人は、フェノロサではないが、日本文化を外国人から、改めて、その文化価値を教えられるのかも知れない。翌日、彼は、写経を行い、更に、抹茶を購入し、茶道も体験しようとしたり、貪欲に、日本文化を学ぼうとしたそうである。我々も、写経や華道、茶道も、きちんと最低限度くらいは、学んでおかなければいけないのかも知れない。更に、彼は、日常生活にでの使えるようにと、作務衣を購入したそうである。今後は、仏教美術や文化財保護活動なども、広く、視野に入れて、文化活動を実践してゆきたいものであると痛感しました。

Am ashamed of impolite behavior:

I , at some time, recalled the word said by DOUGEN Zenji Monk. Behavior even taken at the time of having Meal or any conduct and greeting has some reasonable rationalization , and they will turn to become FORUM for a long time. Finally they will be invisible Rule, Norm, or Etiquette, etc, whatever called, in daily life, however, its original concept or philosophy is , as time goes by, apt to be forgotten and turns to depress us or become mere façade, After finishing ZEN self-meditation experience accompanied by Spanish photographer, we, all the Japanese participants, were ashamed of impolite behavior when we saw him in black-colored uniform bending down to the white wall with both hands up , forehead touching the tatami mat, and greeting Zen monk with both hands joining together.

We, Japanese, like Fenollosa in early Meiji era, are realized by the Value of Japanese Culture by foreigner again. Next day, he hand-copied Zen sutra, Hannyashingyou , though he could not write Kanji character, and studied Tea ceremony with strong passion to study spirit of  Japanese culture in Komoro. We need to study and know even at minimum our own Japanese culture in the field of Flower arrangement, Tea Ceremony, Hand-copying Sutra, etc. he is said to have bought daily uniform as well to wear for daily work. We may try our best to contribute ourselves to participate in such active movement as to support conservation of old Buddhism Art or Japanese Culture in our small local town, I do really feel its importance and be realized again by foreign travelers, unknown Spanish Photographer.
